South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner Edward Kieswetter has expressed his gratitude to the nation’s taxpayers following a landmark achievement in fiscal collection.
Presenting the preliminary revenue outcomes on Wednesday, Kieswetter confirmed that net tax collections for the 2025/26 financial year have surpassed the R2 trillion mark for the first time in history.
Rather than viewing the achievement as a mere financial statistic, the Commissioner emphasised that the result is a testament to the collective responsibility of the public.
In a conversation on Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi, Kieswetter noted that every citizen contributes to this success through daily transactions, effectively making all 62 million South Africans “fiscal citizens” whose compliance ensures the country’s democracy remains funded.
Kieswetter further articulated that while the legal mandate of SARS is to facilitate trade and ensure compliance, the organisation is driven by a “higher purpose.”
He described the work of the revenue service as a vital enabler for the government to build a capable state, fostering sustainable economic growth and social development to improve the wellbeing of all citizens.
