The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed widespread social media reports suggesting that soldiers are preparing to deploy ahead of planned protest marches on 30 June 2026.
The demonstrations, organised by various civil society groups, are calling for the mass repatriation of undocumented foreign nationals.
In an official statement on Thursday 28 May 2026, the military completely distanced itself from the rumors, branding them entirely false and unfounded.
Defence officials reiterated that the SANDF operates strictly within its constitutional mandate, which respects the public’s right to peaceful assembly and protest.
They cautioned social media users against manufacturing or sharing unverified claims that could undermine public trust, create panic, or stoke unnecessary tensions ahead of the event.
The military confirmed that no deployment orders have been issued or even considered for the upcoming marches. To reassure the public and correct the record, the SANDF issued a direct statement on the matter:
“The South African National Defence Force has dismissed reports suggesting it plans to deploy soldiers in anticipation of protest action scheduled for 30 June 2026. The SANDF described the claims circulating on social media as false and unfounded.”
