The numbers from Statistics South Africa tell a pretty clear story. It sounds like the “happily ever after” script is getting a major rewrite in South Africa.

Marriage isn’t necessarily the “final destination” anymore; it’s just one of many options.

In 2024 alone, divorces jumped by nearly 9%, with women leading the charge especially those in professional or managerial roles aged between 40 and 44.

Interestingly, most of these breakups happen after five to fourteen years of marriage.

With the median age for divorce creeping up to 46 for men and 42 for women, it’s obvious that people are staying together longer before deciding to call it quits.

Ultimately, the steady decline in new marriages since 2015, paired with the rise in female-led divorces, suggests a new era of autonomy.

In the recent Drive Moment on Drive 959 a conversation on marriage highlighted a massive shift: people are ditching traditional milestones in favour of personal peace, emotional stability, and self-growth.
