  • The National Consumer Commission has issued a recall for 582 Ford Transit and Tourneo Custom models (2022–2026) due to a battery defect.
  • Faulty H7 AGM batteries may overheat and release toxic hydrogen sulphide gas, posing a significant health risk to passengers.
  • Affected owners are urged to visit an authorised Ford dealership for free repairs to resolve the issue.

Ford South Africa has launched a safety recall affecting nearly 600 vehicles across the Transit and Tourneo Custom ranges.

The recall targets specific units manufactured between 2021 and 2025, following reports of a dangerous chemical reaction within the H7 AGM batteries installed in these models.

The primary concern involves the battery overheating, which can lead to the production of hydrogen sulphide gas.

Drivers may notice a distinct “rotten egg” smell inside the cabin, hear a hissing sound, or see visible gas venting from the battery. In some instances, the seat area—where the battery is typically housed—may feel unusually hot to the touch.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has warned that prolonged exposure to these fumes poses a genuine health hazard to occupants.

Consequently, Ford is offering a free fix for all impacted vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.

If you own a 2022–2026 model year Transit or Tourneo, you are advised to contact your nearest authorised Ford dealership immediately.

Any necessary repair work will be carried out at no cost to the consumer. For further enquiries, the NCC can be reached via their dedicated product recall email.
