A fire broke out over the weekend at the Himeville Magistrate’s Court in the Harry Gwala District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, causing extensive damage to several areas of the building.
Preliminary findings suggest the blaze began in the Magistrate’s office after an on-site contractor lit a fire in the fireplace, which then spread through the premises. Emergency services managed to contain the fire, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.
While the Magistrate’s office, courtroom, and National Prosecuting Authority offices sustained severe damage, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development confirmed that the cash hall and the filing room which holds charge sheets and court records remain unaffected.
The department is currently working with Public Works and Infrastructure officials to identify alternative state-owned properties to temporarily house the court. Further updates regarding interim operational arrangements will be issued shortly to ensure essential legal services continue for the local community.
