However, the victorious Sundowns mentor refused to let the celebrations mask the systemic flaws in South African football.
In a defiant post match address, Cardoso warned that the current structure of the domestic game actively penalises success by overloading teams that progress far in African competitions.
“I believe if South Africa wants to win the Champions League again in the future, some dynamics must change,” Cardoso warned.
“It is important to create better conditions and proper support for clubs competing at this level.”
