  • Two former police officers and three accomplices have been sentenced to 17 years in prison for attempting to interfere with a high-profile ANC murder case.
  • They were paid R120,000 to influence witnesses linked to the killing of Thulani Nxumalo.
  • The sentencing marks another breakthrough in efforts to tackle politically motivated killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

Two former police officers have been sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice and corruption.

The duo was found guilty by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for attempting to interfere with evidence in a high-profile murder case involving the late ANC branch chairperson and Community Policing Forum (CPF) member, Thulani Nxumalo.

Police spokesperson Atlenda Mathe says the accused officers tried to interfere with witnesses in the case.

“The court heard how the two former police officers, Sergeant Bonginkosi Dlamini and Lieutenant Colonel Khepu Ndlovu, together with a local induna, his wife and son, attempted to persuade and influence witnesses not to testify against suspects implicated in the murder case,” said Mathe.

Investigations revealed that the two police officers were paid R120 000 to try to derail the course of justice.

This sentencing is yet another breakthrough for the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which investigated the brutal murder of Nxumalo.

Nxumalo was killed in Kwandengezi in 2018.

On the day of the incident, he was returning home from a BEC meeting while the gunmen waited nearby. As he approached his home, they shot him several times in the neck, chest, and head before fleeing the scene.

He was reportedly killed for investigating allegations that the local induna, Felokwakhe Ndlovu, was selling plots for personal benefit.

Ndlovu, along with Nkosiyanda Ndlovu and Nkosinathi Mbambo, were previously found guilty of Nxumalo’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in October 2024.
