The workplace can be a tricky space to navigate, not just because of deadlines and responsibilities, but because of the judgments we place on one another.

On Feel Good with Andy Maqodwana, the conversation turned to a relatable question: what are some of the things people judge you for at work that really shouldn’t matter?

From lunch habits to office culture, listeners didn’t hold back.

The lunchbox stigma

One listener shared how something as simple as bringing a lunchbox to work can attract unnecessary attention, even on payday.

“We carry our lunchboxes even on payday. You know when you get those looks like, ‘hey girls?’ Someone even asked my friend why she still brings lunch after getting her bonus. But honestly, we see nothing wrong with it.”

The “suck-up” stereotype

Others spoke about colleagues who go out of their way to impress management, often at the expense of others.

“Those people who suck up to authorities… they’ll even say something wrong about someone just to impress. It’s exhausting.”

Cultural expectations and respect

Another listener highlighted how cultural norms can sometimes lead to judgment, especially when it comes to how we address colleagues.

“Calling someone by their name instead of ‘abhuti’ can get you judged. People say it’s disrespectful, especially if it’s an older person.”

Judging others… while being judged

Interestingly, the conversation also turned inward, with listeners admitting they, too, sometimes judge others.

One caller pointed out frustrations with colleagues who put in minimal hours in a hybrid setup, and also raised concerns about overly casual dress codes and extended smoke breaks.

“Some people arrive late, leave early, and you wonder how they’re getting work done… and then there are those who take very long smoke breaks.”

The pressure to socialise

Workplace bonding is important, but not everyone enjoys after-hours or social activities.

“There’s always ‘let’s go for drinks’ or ‘let’s have lunch as a team’. But when you don’t attend, you’re labelled antisocial. It’s not in my contract!”
