  • SAWS has issued a warning for widespread cold, wet and windy conditions expected to affect parts of the Western and Eastern Cape from 3 to 5 June.
  • The weather could lead to flooding of roads, bridges, low-lying areas, and river crossings.
  • Residents and motorists are being urged to exercise caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded areas.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of widespread cold, wet and windy conditions expected to affect the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and adjacent interior regions.

As a result, members of the public have been urged to take extra precautionary measures to avoid potentially dangerous incidents, including drowning and flood-related emergencies.

“This may potentially result in flooding of roads, bridges, low-lying settlements and river crossings,” said SAWS.

“We urge everyone to place their safety first and not take unnecessary risks by attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or rivers.”

The adverse weather conditions are expected to set in on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, and continue until Friday, 5 June 2026.

Motorists have also been warned to expect hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility, waterlogged roads and strong winds.

The warning comes as South Africa continues to witness tragic incidents in which people, particularly motorists, underestimate the force and danger of floodwaters.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid flooded roads and use alternative routes where possible, as vehicles can be swept away in a matter of seconds.

Residents are also advised to secure loose outdoor items, remain indoors where possible during severe weather conditions, and stay updated with official weather alerts and emergency notices.
