  • A Durban driver handed himself over to the RTI after a viral video showed him performing dangerous stunts on a public road.
  • The KZN Department of Transport had appealed to the public to help identify him for violating the National Road Traffic Act.
  • MEC Siboniso Duma warned motorists to obey road laws, stressing that reckless behaviour puts lives at risk.

A Durban driver handed himself over to the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Pinetown on Wednesday, 8 April 2026, after landing in trouble over a viral video showing him performing dangerous stunts while driving.

This comes after the KZN Department of Transport posted the video on its Facebook page, urging followers to help identify the driver, who violated the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 on a commonly used public road.

According to a statement released by MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the department has welcomed the driver handing himself over, adding that he is remorseful and does not consume alcohol.

Duma also warned motorists about the consequences of violating the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations.

“Our hardworking and efficient Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Operation Shanela teams have a responsibility to protect motorists, passengers, and other road users from harm by enforcing laws, managing road safety, and reducing the likelihood of accidents,” said Duma.

“We therefore wish to draw the attention of motorists and passengers to the National Road Traffic Act and its regulations. The Act stipulates that no person driving or having a vehicle on a public road may allow any part of their body to protrude from a vehicle while it is in motion,” he added.

Duma said drivers should remain in full control of their vehicles at all times and avoid stunts that may cause injury to themselves or others.

“When driving a vehicle, the driver must have a clear and unobstructed view of the roadway and traffic ahead,” he said.
