Springboks: Three players who can replace Kolisi when he retires

Siya Kolisi will turn 35-years-old next month, and although he could still play domestic rugby for a good few years, it’s quite likely that he will opt to announce his international retirement after the next World Cup.

It’s quite a daunting prospect, not only when it comes to contemplating who could replace him as captain, but also at openside flank.

Options for Springboks to consider when Kolisi hangs up his boots

Marco van Staden: Although it feels like Van Staden has been around for a long time, he is still only 30-years-old, and is undoubtedly the most “direct” swap for Kolisi. Like Kolisi, he is a powerhouse at the breakdown and strong on defence, while also boasting a ‘warrior’ spirit. Already a regular in the Springbok team, it may just be his time to lock down the No 6 jersey after Kolisi steps away.

Paul de Villiers: The former Junior Springbok star has been in exceptional form domestically. He is a more traditional “fetcher” and has been tipped as the next great openside flanker for the Boks. There are lots of reasons to be excited by the 23-year-old, and there is no doubt that he is the best ‘long-term’ replacement for Kolisi as it stands.

Others to consider

Stalwart Kwagga Smith is 32-years-old now, and he could continue to cover No 6 for at least a couple more years after the 2027 World Cup.

Lions star Francke Horn is perhaps one of the most underrated players in South Africa, and although his regular position is at No 8, it would be interesting to see if the Springbok coaches feel he could be utilised on the flank.

When taking an even long-term view, 2025 Lions U19 Forward of the Year Luke Canon has been deployed at openside flank for the Junior Springboks, and it will be good to keep an eye on his progress over the next few years.
