The South African Police Service (SAPS) has dismissed a viral social media video claiming that the organisation has banned the planned 30 June protest action against illegal immigration.
“SAPS wishes to categorically state that the video is fake news and does not represent the views or position of the Acting National Commissioner or the organisation,” said SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
SAPS strongly condemned those responsible for creating and distributing manipulated and false content aimed at misleading communities and damaging the credibility of the Acting National Commissioner.
“The Acting National Commissioner fully respects the constitutional right of every person to protest, demonstrate and express themselves freely, provided that such action is conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law,” Mathe added.
She said SAPS remains committed to ensuring that all lawful gatherings and protests are policed in a manner that maintains public order while safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
Members of the public have been urged to refrain from sharing unverified information and instead rely on official SAPS communication platforms for accurate updates.
