  • A 53-year-old SAPS captain has been granted (R50,000) bail following his arrest for allegedly embezzling millions from police travel funds.
  • The officer is accused of manipulating the POLFIN system to divert Presidential Protection Services’ travel expenses into personal cash withdrawals.
  • Suspended from duty since before his 6 April arrest, the captain is scheduled to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 30 July.

Johannes Jansen Van Rensburg, a finance captain within the South African Police Service (SAPS) Protection and Security Services, has been released on bail following allegations of large-scale fraud and theft.

The 53-year-old appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court after an internal audit flagged a series of highly irregular financial transactions.

The prosecution alleges that Van Rensburg exploited his position to manipulate the POLFIN administrative system.

He purportedly authorised substantial cash withdrawals under the guise of travel expenses for officers guarding the President, subsequently pocketing the lump sums for his own use.

Following a formal criminal complaint at Sunnyside police station, the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit executed the arrest on 6 April 2026.

The captain had been placed on suspension prior to his detention and will remain off duty as the investigation continues.

He is due back in court in late July to face the charges.
