- One of the conjoined twins from Mankweng Hospital has died following complications after a successful separation surgery.
- Both infants developed severe sepsis, and one passed away due to multiple organ failure despite intensive medical care.
- The remaining twin is in stable condition, while the Health Minister extended condolences and praised the medical team.
One of the conjoined twins from Mankweng Hospital has unfortunately died on Friday, 03 April 2026.
The twin, who also brought hope to the family and the South African healthcare system, died due to complications after the successful operation to separate them.
He was born with an abdomen attached to his other twin in January 2026. The remaining twin is said to be in a healthy condition.
According to the medical team, both infants developed severe sepsis following the highly complex separation procedure. The condition, a serious infection that can affect multiple organs, was treated with antibiotics and inotropic support in the intensive care unit.
Despite extensive efforts by healthcare professionals, one of the babies died early due to multiple organ failure linked to the infection.
Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
“The Minister also acknowledged the exceptional work of the multidisciplinary team at Mankweng Hospital, whose efforts demonstrated the strength and capability of the country’s public health system in performing highly specialised and complex surgical procedures.
The Minister assures the family that the remaining twin will continue to receive the highest level of medical care, and the Department will continue to monitor the child’s condition closely,” said Department of Health spokesperson Foster Mohale.
