Nearly HALF of South Africa’s youth are currently out of work

South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis has deepened further, with nearly half of all young people now without work, according to the latest official labour data.

Stats SA’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey shows the youth unemployment rate, covering those aged 15 to 34, rose to 45.8% in the first quarter of 2026.

This marks an increase of 2.0 percentage points from the previous quarter, driven by both rising job losses and fewer young people entering employment.

South African youth job crisis deepens

According to the stats, the total number of unemployed youth increased by 181 000 to reach 4.7 million, while the number of employed young people fell by 258 000 to 5.6 million.

The scale of the problem highlights how concentrated South Africa’s labour market challenges are among younger workers, many of whom are entering a system that is not generating enough entry-level opportunities.

At the same time, discouraged work-seekers are also rising, suggesting that more young people are giving up on actively looking for work.

With South Africa’s youth making up a large share of the population, the trend has significant and alarming implications for long-term economic stability and social development.

The two provinces where job losses are hitting hardest

The data also revealed that Gauteng and North West recorded some of the steepest declines, with job losses of 67 000 and 80 000, respectively.

Gauteng, the country’s economic hub, continues to feel pressure across multiple sectors, particularly in construction, transport and community services.

The province’s slowdown is significant given its role in driving national employment trends.

North West, meanwhile, saw the sharpest provincial decline, reflecting ongoing weakness in mining-linked employment and related industries.

KwaZulu-Natal, however, was the only province to record a slight increase in employment, adding around 6 000 jobs, offering a rare positive signal in an otherwise weak labour market.
