  • General Fannie Masemola has been summoned to court on 21 April over a R360 million health tender.
  • SAPS confirmed the summons and stated that the Commissioner pledges full cooperation with the investigation.
  • The “Medicare24” contract scandal is expected to lead to further arrests of high-ranking police officials.

General Fannie Masemola, South Africa’s National Police Commissioner, has been officially summoned to appear in court on 21 April.

The charges relate to a contentious R360 million health tender awarded to Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.

This legal move follows an extensive investigation into the “Medicare24” police contract, which has long been under scrutiny for alleged irregularities.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the summons was served on Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicated that the Commissioner has taken note of the charges and intends to cooperate fully with all lawful processes.

Mathe added that Masemola welcomes any due process aimed at addressing allegations of wrongdoing within the department.

This high-profile summons is expected to be the first of many legal actions regarding the contract.

Sources within the investigation suggest that further arrests of senior police officials are imminent as the probe into the multi-million rand tender deepens.

The case marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to root out corruption within the country’s top law enforcement structures.
