Kruger National Park readies itself for winter fire season

The Kruger National Park is to begin rolling out controlled burns ahead of the winter fire season, warning that larger areas than usual could burn this year following heavy summer rainfall.

The park’s fire season typically runs from June to October, but officials say exceptional rainfall during the recent summer months has significantly increased grass growth across large sections of the reserve, creating more fuel for veldfires.

Dry winter period

The rainfall, which also caused flood damage in parts of the park, has left conditions favourable for more extensive fires during the dry winter period.

Park management said fire plays a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and has long been a natural part of life in the Kruger Park.

“Over thousands of years, plants and animals have adapted to living in an environment where fires play an important role in keeping ecosystems healthy,” the park said.

Controlled burns are now being carried out by rangers both for ecological purposes and fire prevention, with officials aiming to reduce dense grass cover before the peak fire season arrives.

The burns also help prevent large, uncontrolled wildfires that could threaten wildlife, infrastructure and visitor facilities.

Safety preparations

Kruger Park authorities said firebreaks are being maintained around tourist camps, gates, staff accommodation and boundary areas as part of broader safety preparations.

Wildlife species including zebras, buffaloes and wildebeest are known to benefit from post-fire regrowth, often grazing on fresh, nutrient-rich grass shortly after burned areas recover.

The park said it will monitor fire activity using ranger patrols and satellite mapping technology throughout the season.
