Johannesburg to host Taste of Cultures Food Festival

May is recognised as Africa Month. As the name suggests, it’s a time when residents of Africa celebrate the multiple threads that make up the tapestry of this beautiful continent: unity, diversity and traditions, among others.

To commemorate this particular month, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg will be hosting a food festival aptly named “Taste of Cultures”. Here, attendees can sink their teeth into flavoursome dishes made famous in Africa as well as on international soil.

Here’s all you need to know about the food festival:

TASTE OF CULTURES FOOD FESTIVAL INFO

For South African citizens, tickets cost R170 each for adults and R120 each for children, students and pensioners. South African identification is required.

As for international visitors, tickets cost R240 each for adults and R190 each for children, students and pensioners.

CONTINENTAL CUISINES

Speaking to Time Out, museum representative Mduduzi Ntuli said that attendees can expect a wide range of dishes that reflect African cultures, from Afrikaans to Zulu.

What’s more, says Ntuli, there will be plenty of international cuisines for you to sample: Italian, Indian, Portuguese and much, much more!

“It’s various cultures,” he explained, “so it’s not just SADC, it’s not just tribes, but it’s sort of like the global community.”

WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT

In addition to the delicious food, there will be arts and crafts stalls for you to peruse.

There will also be live entertainment, which promises to be a showcase of local and international talent.

All in all, the Taste of Cultures Food Festival promises to be an enriching and fun event, where you and others from different walks of life can come together and celebrate all things Africa.

FESTIVAL FEVER TAKES OVER JOHANNESBURG

Johannesburg has become something of a food festival hotspot in recent years.

If your mouth is watering over the Taste of Cultures Food Festival, then your taste buds will love the Portuguese Festival, which will take place later this month. There, you can feast on Portuguese dishes galore, participate in various family-friendly activities and shop around for clothing, crafts and trinkets.

Let us know in the comments below if you’re planning to visit Joburg for either (or both!) of these festivals.
