The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has introduced a definitive ban on transgender women competing in female categories, aligning its official eligibility standards with a recent executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump.
This new framework, confirmed following an executive board meeting on Thursday, establishes that participation in women’s individual and team events at the Olympic Games will be strictly limited to biological females.
To enforce this, the committee will now require a mandatory, one-time SRY gene screening for all athletes entering the female category.
While the policy marks a significant shift in international sports governance, its immediate impact on the current competitive field is narrow; notably, no transitioned transgender women competed in the 2024 Paris Games.
The IOC’s 10-page policy document further extends these restrictions to athletes with differences in sex development (DSD), which will affect prominent competitors such as two-time Olympic champion Caster Semenya.
The committee stated that these measures are designed to safeguard the “fairness, safety, and integrity” of women’s sport.
Scheduled for full implementation by the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games, the new rules are notably not retroactive and do not extend to recreational or grassroots athletics.
The IOC maintains that this approach upholds the Olympic Charter’s principle of sport as a human right while ensuring a level playing field at the elite level.
