How much MORE it will now cost to fill these FIVE popular vehicles

South African motorists are set to face one of the largest fuel price increases in the country’s history when new prices take effect on Wednesday, 1 April.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has confirmed steep increases in both petrol and diesel prices following a turbulent month in global oil markets and continued weakness in the rand.

Major Fuel Price Increases Announced

According to the official adjustment, petrol will increase by R3.06 per litre, while diesel prices will surge even higher, rising by between R7.37 and R7.51 per litre, depending on the grade.

The increases mark one of the most significant single-month fuel price adjustments South Africa has experienced, placing additional pressure on motorists, businesses, and the broader economy.

Global Pressures Behind the Spike

The sharp increases come after a period of extreme volatility in global oil markets. Analysts point to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and currency fluctuations as the primary drivers behind the surge.

Oil prices spiked after the United States launched military strikes against Iran on 28 February, raising fears of supply disruptions in one of the world’s most critical oil-producing regions.

At the same time, the weakening South African rand has further intensified the impact. Because oil is traded globally in US dollars, a weaker rand makes imported fuel significantly more expensive for South Africa.

Impact on Consumers and Businesses

The fuel price hikes are expected to ripple through the economy in the coming weeks.

Higher fuel costs typically lead to increases in transport and logistics expenses, which often translate into higher prices for food, goods, and services. Sectors that rely heavily on diesel, such as agriculture, freight, and mining, are likely to feel the pressure most immediately.

For everyday motorists, the increases will place additional strain on already stretched household budgets.

Uncertain Road Ahead

With global geopolitical tensions still unfolding and currency markets remaining volatile, economists warn that fuel prices could remain unpredictable in the months ahead.

Motorists and businesses alike will be watching international developments closely as South Africa navigates one of the most dramatic fuel price shifts in recent years.
