Asenathi Ntlabakanye is the latest Springbok to receive a hefty doping ban after testing positive for an illegal substance. The national team newbie – who has made just four national team caps – will not be eligible to play at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
ASENATHI NTLABAKANYE RECEIVES DOPING BAN
An independent doping tribunal panel has issued a hefty doping ban to Springbok and Lions player Asenathi Ntlabakanye.
The 27-year-old has received an 18-month ban, effective from 13 May. This will run until November 2027, making him ineligible to play at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Last year, Asenathi tested positive for Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which boosts testosterone and can aid muscle growth and athletic performance, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list.
Asenathi, who “self-declared” using DHEA, believing it was allowed, has 21 days to appeal the decision.
According to reports, Asenathi could lose up to R5-million in Springboks earnings over the next 18 months.
