South African celebs step out in style for the Johannesburg premiere as the Michael Jackson biopic opens in cinemas this week

The much-anticipated biopic of late American singer Michael Jackson, titled MICHAEL, is set to open in cinemas across South Africa this Wednesday, 22 April 2026.
According to the official synopsis, the film traces Jackson’s journey from the discovery of his talent as the lead singer of the Jackson Five to becoming one of the biggest entertainers in the world.
“Highlighting both his life off stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins,” the synopsis reads.

A star-studded affair
On Friday, 17 April, Ster-Kinekor IMAX at Mall of Africa rolled out the red carpet for the film’s star-studded South African premiere.
More than 400 guests attended the event, including celebrities, content creators, and VIPs.
Notable attendees included Bontle Modiselle, Hungani Ndlovu, Siv Ngesi, Tarina Patel, and Tumisho Masha; award-winning content creators Kim Jayde and Robot Boii; as well as legendary actress Connie Ferguson.
Celebrity couple Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala and Siphiwe Tshabalala also made an appearance, along with Vourne and Theo Kgosinkwe.
Hosted by Tbo Touch, the event also reunited five South African creators who attended the global premiere of MICHAEL in Berlin last week, namely Bontle Modiselle, Chad Jones, Carpo More, Bobby van Jaarsveld, and Hope Ramafalo.
