Four killed in police shootout linked to extortion in Khayelitsha

Four alleged extortionists were shot and killed during a confrontation with police in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, on Wednesday, 26 March 2026.

The incident unfolded after police received a tip-off about suspects linked to business extortion. Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description and attempted to pull it over on Japhta K. Masemola Road.

According to police spokesperson Novela Potelwa, the suspects allegedly drew firearms and pointed them at officers, prompting police to respond.

“As a consequence, four yet-to-be-identified men were shot and killed. Three firearms were seized from the scene,” Potelwa said.

Authorities confirmed that the firearms recovered belonged to the suspects.

Following the shooting, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
