National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, is in hot water after being charged with four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act.
These counts relate to the R360 million tender fraud linked to alleged underworld kingpin, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Masemola appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, where his matter was postponed to 13 May 2026.
His case has been joined to the criminal matter against Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and twelve SAPS officers, relating to the Medicare 24 Tshwane contract.
Masemola -as the senior accounting officer of the SAPS is accused of breaching public finance regulations in relation to the contract.
The State explained that Masemola’s alleged offences do not fall within the ambit of Schedule 5 and therefore did not warrant arrest but rather a summons.
Speaking immediately after his appearance, Masemola told the media he followed due processes regarding the contract.
Making his way out of court, he assured the public that he is not guilty.
“Police officers must remain committed and do the work. I might be dragged closer to serious criminals, but they must remain committed to serving South Africans.
I know I am not guilty, but the law will take its course. All I am saying is the SAPS must stay focused on doing their work,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cat Matlala has been temporarily moved from the Ebongweni C-max prison in KwaZulu-Natal to Kgosi Mampuru in Pretoria.
This temporary relocation from his usual facility is intended to facilitate legal consultations until his next court appearance on 13 May 2026.
