- A murder suspect who escaped from custody in the Eastern Cape has been re-arrested after being found asleep at his aunt’s home.
- Seven other escapees remain at large, with police actively searching for them.
- Authorities have warned the public not to approach the suspects and to report any information to police.
An Eastern Cape murder suspect who escaped prison with his seven co-accused has been found by police sleeping at his aunt’s home.
Siphelele Mkhulisi, who is facing a charge of murder, was re-arrested on Monday, 06 April 2026, after escaping from the Afsondering SAPS holding cells.
Police are still searching for his seven co-accused who also escaped from the holding cells.
Brigadier Nobantu Gantana said the eight detainees were in custody for serious offences, including murder, rape, crimen injuria, and assault.
Gantana said police acted on intelligence and found Mkhulisi asleep at his aunt’s residence in the Masakala location in Matatiele.
“The suspect was found still asleep and was arrested without incident,” she said.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape, including a separate case of aiding and abetting, is ongoing.
“The team is actively following up on information that will lead to the arrest of the remaining seven escapees, who face charges including murder, rape, assault, and crimen injuria,” Gantana said.
Members of the public have been cautioned not to attempt to apprehend the escapees, as they are considered dangerous.
They have, however, been urged to contact their nearest police station if they have information that might lead to the arrest of the other seven suspects.
