The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has initiated an investigation into social media content that reportedly shows a Mr Mark Saltzman using the “k-word” and other racially inflammatory language.

The Commission stepped in independently, launching the probe in accordance with its constitutional and legislative mandate.

At this preliminary stage, the SAHRC is focusing on verifying the authenticity of the online material.

The body will assess the evidence against its established complaints-handling procedures and applicable equality jurisprudence to determine the appropriate legal next steps.

Reaffirming its stance against prejudice, the Commission reminded the public that the “k-word” remains one of the most painful and degrading racial slurs in the country’s history.

It noted that South African courts have repeatedly ruled on the severe harm such language inflicts on human dignity, equality, and social cohesion.

The SAHRC will withhold further substantive comment while the formal process is underway.
