Synopsis
Having just been promoted to commander of the 396th Combined Arms Brigade, Xu Lingjun receives a heavy responsibility from his former battalion commander, Liang Beihua, now deputy commander of the theater army’s ground forces. Liang asks Xu to lead the brigade through a pilot program for army transformation. Liang recalls his own experience during the major military downsizing of 1985, while Xu remembers how, during the military restructuring of 1998, the best company commander in the division was forced into early retirement because he couldn’t adapt to new equipment. Now, this new round of army transformation must aim for world-class standards and meet the demands of the new era—a formidable task.
Guo Zijian, commander of the 396th Brigade’s 1st Battalion, is awaiting discharge after a training accident. Xu carefully reviews the incident and boldly decides to retain Guo. During the transformation process, Guo lives up to expectations. In a sudden cross-theater high-intensity exercise imposed on the 396th Brigade, their opponents—a “Blue Force” brigade—have never lost. Despite Xu’s brilliant command, his brigade suffers heavy losses. However, he succeeds in keeping Guo’s battalion intact. In the final stage, Guo uses the new capabilities of the combined arms battalion to deploy a series of clever tactics and carries out a decisive “decapitation” strike against the Blue Force.
