The iconic arch of the Moses Mabhida Stadium may still dominate the skyline, but the hallowed turf below is officially taking a breather.
The eThekwini Municipality has announced that the stadium pitch is undergoing an essential rehabilitation programme, rendering the surface off-limits to all sporting action until the end of April.
The “temporary closure,” which is set to run until 30 April 2026, is part of a critical maintenance push to restore the playing surface to its world-class glory.
Moses Mabhida Stadium prepping for a massive May
According to City officials, this isn’t just routine mowing. The rehabilitation is a high-stakes effort to ensure the pitch meets international standards ahead of a packed fixture schedule in May.
“This rehabilitation programme is necessary to restore the playing surface to optimal condition,” the City stated.
The goal is to ensure the grass can handle the “heavy tackles and high-speed play” expected when the stadium returns to the spotlight next month.
The work is a key pillar of the City’s ongoing commitment to keeping the 2010 World Cup venue ranked as a premier, world-class sporting and events facility.
What does this mean for fans?
If you were hoping to kick a ball around or catch a local match this week, you’re out of luck. However, for those visiting for the views rather than the sport, it’s business as usual.
While the pitch is under “hospital care,” the rest of the stadium remains fully operational, including stadium tours, retail outlets and visitor facilities.
The gates to the green are expected to swing open again on 1 May, just in time for the next big kick-off.
