MANILA, Philippines — The Atin Ito Coalition, on its fourth civilian mission to the West Philippine Sea en route to Pag-asa Island, observed Labor Day at sea to honor Filipino fisherfolk and frontline workers who continue to protect livelihoods in the country’s waters.
Aboard the mission’s primary vessel, MV Kapitan Felix Oca, volunteers held a brief program on deck and displayed banners recognizing those who work daily in the West Philippine Sea amid China’s harassment of Filipino vessels.
Earlier, it was reported that the National Maritime Council (NMC) strongly denounced a series of “aggressive and hazardous” actions by Chinese maritime forces targeting Philippine vessels, personnel, and local fisherfolk in the West Philippine Sea throughout March.

Leading the mission, Atin Ito co-convenor and Akbayan President Rafaela David highlighted the bravery of fisherfolk and frontliners amid rising tensions.
“This Labor Day, we salute the courage of our fishermen who continue to earn a living despite Chinese intimidation and violence,” said David.
She emphasized that honoring their efforts should be matched with sustained government action.
David noted that authorities must intensify support and protection efforts in Philippine waters to secure the livelihoods of fisherfolk facing threats.
“The fight for the West Philippine Sea is not just a fight for territory. A sustained response is needed to protect not only the livelihood of our fishermen but also the dignity of every Filipino,” she added in Filipino.
The observance also aligns with the start of the National Month of Fisherfolk and Farmers, with Atin Ito urging stronger support for rural workers who sustain the nation’s food supply.
“We are calling for additional support for all our fishermen, especially in the midst of the crisis and high crude oil prices,” David added.
“I hope our government will now listen to our concerns as fisherfolk, especially now that crude oil prices are high,” said Hilda Reyes of San Miguel Women Fish Vendors at Municipal Fisheries Aquatic Resource Management Council of San Antonio, Zambales.
Akbayan Representative Dadah Kiram Ismula vowed to champion the rights of fisherfolk, calling for access to adequate food, job security, and stronger protection against threats in Philippine waters.
“With every fish you catch, you feed the entire Philippines. With every watchful eye on our waters, your protect our honor,” said Ismula to fisherfolk, adding that their hard work is not wasted.
The mission is expected to arrive at Pag-asa Island on May 2 in the afternoon. There, the Atin Ito coalition will distribute food, hygiene kits, and fuel, provide medical assistance, and hold a community program featuring the Filipino rap group Morobeats.
One of the key highlight is the “Patriotic Jetski Flag Ride” off Pag-asa Island, led by Akbayan lawmaker Dadah Kiram Ismula, as a peaceful demonstration of the country’s sovereign rights. INQ /mr
