Former Bafana Bafana captain Teko Modise was glaringly absent from the 2010 legends squad that played Mexico over the weekend.
Modise was part of the original squad that included Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, and Steven Pienaar, who played in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 16 years ago at Soccer City (now FNB Stadium).
According to reports, the player fondly known as “The General” turned down the chance to play in the rematch

During his career, Teko Modise played for high-profile clubs Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns from 2007 to 2017, winning the PSL Footballer of the Year title twice. He then played for Cape Town City until his official retirement in 2019.
Modise made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2007 and went on to captain the national team. He was selected to play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which South Africa hosted.
Since hanging up his boots, the now 43-year-old has transitioned into various roles, including administrative, corporate, and youth development positions. Like many retired players, he has become a football television pundit and an ambassador for several high-profile companies, including Nedbank, Hollywoodbets, Huawei, and Shield (now Rexona).
Teko Modise has also ventured into fashion, taking up runway modelling and becoming the face of several African fashion labels, including his own called Fasion Don.
Last year, he was given the title of GQ South Africa’s Best Dressed Classic Man award.
In her personal life, Modise recently divorced influencer Koketso Chipane last year. Prior to that, he was married to Felicia Mokoena and engaged to model Lizelle Tabane.

Although he was an obvious omission from the 2010 legends squad, Teko Modise has made it clear that he is in full support of Bafana Bafana’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to the media, Modise appealed to South Africans not to place too much pressure on the players, but to support and encourage them instead.
“We want to see the boys succeed…I’m proud to be a South African”.
