British actor and DJ Idris Elba has officially received his knighthood and is now formally addressed as Sir Idris Elba.
King Charles III knighted the award-winning star of The Wire and Luther during an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
According to the official social media pages of the Royal Family, Elba was honoured for his services to young people, social justice, and youth empowerment.
“Congratulations to everyone who received honours at today’s Investiture ceremonies, hosted by The King at Windsor Castle. Amongst recipients were… Sir @IdrisElba for services to young people,” the Royal Family said on X.
PEOPLE reports that Elba’s knighthood was first announced in King Charles’ 2026 New Year’s Honours list.
Elba has long-standing ties to the Royal Family.
When he was 18 years old, he received a £1500 grant from The King’s Trust, which he has often credited with helping kickstart his acting career. In 2016, he was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire).
Elba has also been actively involved in social causes.
In 2024, he launched the anti-knife crime campaign Don’t Stop Your Future, which addresses youth violence and advocates for systemic reform to protect vulnerable young people in the UK.
He is the co-founder of The Elba Hope Foundation, launched in 2022 alongside his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba. The organisation focuses on tackling youth unemployment, education gaps, and food insecurity.
