  • KZN authorities have warned residents and protesters against inciting violence or damaging property during ongoing anti-migrant demonstrations in parts of the province.
  • Police say most marches have remained peaceful but are monitoring social media for content that could encourage unlawful behaviour under the Cybercrimes Act.
  • Law enforcement agencies have confirmed they will be deployed before, during and after the planned 30 June 2026 protests to ensure public order and safety.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) authorities have issued a stern warning to residents and participants in anti-migrant protests, urging them not to engage in violence, intimidation or the destruction of property.

The warning comes as parts of the province, particularly Durban, continue to witness demonstrations calling for action against undocumented foreign nationals.

While police have noted that most of the marches have remained peaceful, concerns have been raised about social media posts and public statements that could potentially incite violence and lawlessness.

“Members of the public are reminded to take note of Section 14 of the Cybercrimes Act, Act No. 19 of 2020, which states that any person who discloses, by means of an electronic communications service, a data message to a person, group of persons or the general public with the intention of inciting damage to property or violence against individuals or groups, is guilty of an offence,” said KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

In South Africa, the right to protest is protected by the Constitution. However, demonstrations must take place within the confines of the law and may not involve acts of violence, intimidation or damage to property.

Authorities have encouraged protesters to express their concerns peacefully and responsibly, warning that violence often results in injuries, loss of life and further instability within communities.

“Police are monitoring the public space, and cybercrime officers will be profiling posts and statements that are deemed to be inciting violence,” Netshiunda added.

Police have also reiterated that organisers of the planned 30 June 2026 demonstrations have committed to peaceful action.

Law enforcement agencies have nevertheless indicated that they will deploy resources before, during and after the protests to maintain public order and ensure the safety of all residents.

“Anyone found breaking the law will be dealt with accordingly, without fear, favour or prejudice,” said Netshiunda.
