  • Three people were killed in a shooting in Eldorado Park over the weekend, with police still investigating the motive.
  • City of Johannesburg Speaker Margaret Arnolds has condemned the violence and called on social media users to stop sharing graphic videos of the incident.
  • The tragedy has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about gang-related crime and violence in the area.

Three people were tragically killed in a fatal shooting in Eldorado Park over the weekend, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this stage, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The Office of the Speaker in the City of Johannesburg has expressed its deepest condolences to the affected families.

Speaker of Council, Margaret Arnolds, condemned the senseless violence that has robbed families of their loved ones and left the Eldorado Park community traumatised.

“Incidents of violent crime continue to inflict profound emotional and social harm on residents and undermine the sense of safety and security that every community needs,” said Arnolds.

Furthermore, Arnolds criticised social media users who have been circulating videos of the shooting, saying the viral spread of violent content not only retraumatises grieving families but also contributes to the normalisation of violence in society.

“At a time when families are mourning the loss of their loved ones, the last thing they should endure is the further trauma of graphic images and videos of the tragedy being repeatedly shared across social media platforms,” she added.

Fatal shootings are not a new phenomenon in Eldorado Park, an area that has long struggled with gang-related violence and crime, particularly among young people.

The ongoing crime crisis in the area prompted law enforcement authorities to deploy members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) earlier this year as part of efforts to combat crime and restore stability in the community.
