- Johannesburg motorists have been warned to expect major traffic disruptions around the Nasrec precinct this weekend.
- Several large events, including Dr Tumi’s Gathering of Worshippers at FNB Stadium, are expected to draw massive crowds.
- JMPD says extensive road closures, parking controls, and traffic management measures will be in place throughout the weekend.
It’s month-end and, in true South African spirit, Johannesburg is gearing up for a busy weekend packed with major events, meaning motorists should prepare for significant traffic disruptions.
The Nasrec precinct will host several large events simultaneously, including The Gathering of Worshippers by Dr Tumi at FNB Stadium, the Portuguese Festival, and HYROX at the Expo Centre.
As a result, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has announced extensive traffic management measures for the weekend.
According to JMPD, the measures are intended to ensure the safety of attendees expected at FNB Stadium and visitors at the Expo Centre.
Primary road closures and traffic control points
Traffic officers will be deployed from 10:00 to 21:00 on Saturday and from 08:00 until midnight on Sunday to manage congestion at key intersections.
Affected areas include:
- Nasrec Road at Landbou Road, Recreation Street, Stadium Road, and Shaft 17
- Golden Highway at Ring Road 1, Ring Road 2, Stadium Road, and Soweto Highway
- Soweto Highway near the N1 South on-ramp, League Avenue, and the Shaft 17 East off-ramp
- Expo Centre access points at Rand Show Road & Commerce Street, and Ring Road 2 & Exhibition Road
Parking guidelines
For events at FNB Stadium, VIP parking will be located on the western side of the venue, while general parking will be available at the eastern overflow area and Shaft 17 parking.
Visitors attending Expo Centre events will use parking areas one to four.
Park-and-Ride buses will operate from the designated zone along Golden Highway between Soweto Highway and Stadium Road.
JMPD warned that illegal parking and informal car guards will not be tolerated during the weekend operations.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said officers will actively monitor Nasrec Road and Rand Show Road to prevent obstructions and ensure pedestrian safety.
