  • The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) will launch its own ride-hailing service, Gau Express, in October to solve “last-mile” connectivity for rail commuters.
  • Built directly into the existing Gautrain app, the new service will offer discounted fares to train passengers, who can pay using standard methods or their Gautrain cards.
  • The launch coincides with severe market disruption caused by the National Land Transport Amendment Act, which has left major competitors like Uber scrambling for formal compliance certificates.

The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) plans to launch its own Uber style, ride hailing service, Gau Express, this October.

The move thrusts the state-owned commuter rail operator directly into South Africa’s urban-mobility market during a period of significant regulatory upheaval for private e-hailing platforms.

According to GMA Chief Executive Tshepo Kgobe, the service will be integrated into the existing Gautrain app.

It is designed to bridge the “last-mile” gap for commuters who require immediate transport rather than waiting for scheduled feeder buses.

To ensure easy identification, the vehicles will feature Gautrain’s distinct gold and blue livery.

Passengers will be able to pay via conventional methods or by using the balance on their Gautrain cards, with discounted fares available to those connecting directly from the trains.

Gau Express enters a market heavily reshaped by the National Land Transport Amendment Act, which came into effect in September 2025.

The legislation ended a decade of legal ambiguity by forcing e-hailing operators to register with national regulators, mandate panic buttons, and display clear branding.

Platforms face fines of up to R100,000 or two years’ imprisonment for employing unlicensed drivers.

Compliance across the sector remains highly fractured.

Following the March 2026 registration deadline, market leader Uber is still operating without its official certificate and is actively lobbying the government for further discussions.
