Lilepo scores and sees red as Chiefs edge out AmaZulu

Glody Lilepo’s well-worked second half strike was enough to give Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 Betway Premiership win over AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

From Chiefs hero to marching orders

Lilepo did not cover himself in glory after scoring, taking off his shirt in celebration, and receiving a red card.

Chiefs, however, held off Arthur Zwane’s AmaZulu with ten men, extending their lead over Usuthu to ten points.

Amakhosi had already sealed third place in the Premiership and a place in the Caf Confederation Cup before kick off.

Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen may well have forced his way into the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. And he showed why in just the eighth minute here, producing an excellent point blank save to deny Sandile Mthethwa.

Amakhosi youngster Mfundo Vilakazi was given a chance to shine from the start in Durban. And he hit a shot in the tenth minute that deflected just over the bar.

Vilakazi also sent a free kick off target, while Ethan Chislett’s effort from another set piece also went over.

AmaZulu tested Petersen again in the 27th minute, a cross-shot from Hendrick Ekstein parried away by the Chiefs shot-stopper.

Amakhosi threaten

Chiefs finally tested AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela in the 54th minute. And Mzimela almost made a hash of Vilakazi’s curling shot, tipping it onto the post.

AmaZulu went straight up the other end and Petersen saved another Ekstein effort.

In the 57th minute, Reeve Frosler lashed in a right-footed shot and this time Mzimela did superbly to tip the ball over the bar.

Chiefs went in front in the 67th minute. Lilepo played a brilliant one-two with Vilakazi and beat Mzimela.

The Chiefs winger, however, took off his shirt to celebrate and, having already been booked earlier in the game for diving, gave referee Christopher Kistoor no option but to send him off.
