Gezane Eric Kobane, the celebrated musician better known as Papa Penny, has officially resigned from the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and his seat in Parliament.
In a formal letter to party leader Jacob Zuma, Kobane cited an untenable working environment characterized by personal attacks and belittlement from the party’s Limpopo provincial leadership.
While Kobane acknowledged that he joined the MKP prepared for the sacrifices inherent in political struggle, he expressed shock that the primary hostility originated from within his own ranks.
He noted that while he could tolerate opposition from political enemies, the “betrayal” by his provincial colleagues had made it impossible for him to continue his membership.
A significant factor in his departure was the impact on his public standing. Kobane raised concerns over media statements he believes were designed to tarnish a reputation built over decades of hard work.
He emphasized that he had served the party to the best of his ability since being sworn in following the 2024 general elections.
Despite the friction with regional leaders, Kobane concluded his correspondence with a note of appreciation for Jacob Zuma. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have served in the National Assembly and offered his best wishes for the party’s future.
