Cape Town to be battered by TWO cold fronts in next 72 hours

The City of Cape Town says it is on high alert ahead of two approaching cold fronts expected to hit the Western Cape this weekend.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the first cold front is expected to make landfall on Sunday, followed by a second system on Monday.

Disruptive rainfall

Forecasters have warned that the weather systems could bring disruptive rainfall, strong winds and rough sea conditions along coastal areas, increasing the risk of localised flooding across parts of the city and surrounding regions.

City Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said disaster response teams remain on standby following severe weather experienced earlier this week.

“We ask that residents put in place mitigation measures to protect their properties, including clearing gutters and any other blockages on their property,” Powell said.

Check gutters

She also urged residents to check for roof leaks, secure loose outdoor items such as garden furniture, and take precautionary steps to reduce flooding risks.

“Residents should secure any loose items and materials like garden furniture etc. that could be vulnerable to wind gusts. They should also consider digging trenches to lead water away from their homes if in informal settlements,” she added.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, monitor weather updates closely and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain or strong winds.
