WATCH | Donald Trump jokes that he and Melania won’t match his parents’ 63-year marriage

Donald and Melania Trump are hosting the King and Queen of England, King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who are in Washington for a state visit honouring 250 years of the independence of the US from Britain.

On 4 July 1776, the United States officially declared its independence from Great Britain.

As part of the formal events of the state visit, the president made his speech on the South Lawn of the White House.

In part, Donald said in his speech: “My wonderful mother, Mary MacLeod, was born in Stornoway, the Hebrides, what they call very serious Scotland…”.

“She came to America at 19. Met my incredible father, we loved him so much… They were married for 63 years, and I’m sorry, if you don’t mind,” says Donald before turning to face his wife.

“That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling. I’m sorry,” Donald says to the first lady. “It’s just not going to work out that way. We’ll do well, but we’re not gonna do that well,” said Donald.

“My mother… loved the royal family, and she loved the queen. And anytime the queen was involved in a ceremony or anything, my mother would be glued to the television and say, ‘Look, darling, look how beautiful that is.’ She really did love the family, but I also remember her saying, ‘… young Charles, he’s so cute.’ My mother had a crush on Charles, can you believe it?” said Donald.

Donald Trump is much older than Melania

Donald (79) and Melania Trump (56) have been married for over 21 years, having tied the knot on January 22, 2005, in Palm Beach, Florida

He is 23 years older than Melania, so he was likely referring to the likelihood of him not living long enough to rack up 42 more years to match 63 years his parents have been married.
