Football legend Doctor Khumalo will receive an Honorary Doctorate from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Thursday, 30 April 2026.
The higher learning institution announced that it is honouring three distinguished South Africans with honorary doctorates this autumn in recognition of their outstanding contributions to sport, mining, business leadership, and national development.
And who’s more deserving than the former Bafana Bafana midfielder, Theophilus “Doctor” Khumalo, is among the individuals who will be honoured at the institution.
Khumalo became a midfield maestro for Kaizer Chiefs and a cornerstone of the South African national team during the country’s re-entry into international football after isolation.
He played a pivotal role in Bafana Bafana’s historic 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph on home soil, helping to reintroduce South African football to the global stage with flair, leadership, and humility.
Mining entrepreneur Daphne Mashile-Nkosi and seasoned business executive Paul Mpho Makwana will also be honoured.
TUT says their achievements embody the institution’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and addressing societal challenges through knowledge creation.
“Honorary doctorates are among the highest recognitions in academia, awarded to individuals whose work has made a profound impact beyond the classroom. These honourees serve as powerful role models whose careers align with TUT’s vision of a people-centred university that drives progress through cutting-edge teaching, learning, and research,” TUT said in a media statement.
