  • Two people died in a head-on collision between a BMW sedan and a Toyota Fortuner on the N1 in Polokwane.
  • The crash is believed to have been caused by the BMW driver losing control of the vehicle.
  • Limpopo premier Phophi Ramathuba urged motorists to practise patience, especially during the busy Easter travel period.

Two people lost their lives in a horrific accident on Thursday afternoon on the N1 in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The accident, which occurred on 02 April 2026 at 14h35 on the N1-26 Lunds in the Capricorn District, involved a BMW sedan and a Toyota Fortuner SUV.

The BMW sedan reportedly lost control and collided head-on with the Toyota Fortuner SUV. The crash, unfortunately, resulted in two deaths, while another passenger required immediate medical attention.

The possible cause of the accident is believed to be the driver of the BMW sedan losing control of the vehicle.

This deadly accident comes as Arrive Alive and other departments continue to launch road safety campaigns as the Easter weekend begins.

The Easter period is a critical period for road traffic management authorities in South Africa. It is also one of the periods where South Africa sees an increase in road fatalities, which are among the main causes of death in the country.

Limpopo’s premier, Phophi Ramathuba, has urged drivers to practise patience on the roads.

“Everyone is in a hurry to reach their destination, but unfortunately, being in a hurry might lead to such misfortunes. We are appealing to drivers to practise patience. This accident is a clear indication that drivers are not patient with each other on the road,” she said.

Ramathuba reminded drivers that any decision they make on the road can be irreversible.

“We have lost two lives already because of a decision taken by a driver. Before you overtake or make a U-turn, please think twice, because innocent lives continue to be lost every day,” she added.
