MultiChoice has announced that subscribers of its popular video-on-demand streaming service Showmax will get free trial access to DStv Stream Compact, with the option to continue at R99 per month from Wednesday, 1 April 2026.
The move is part of a wider strategy to consolidate content onto a single platform, bringing Showmax Originals together with live TV, sport, and international entertainment on DStv Stream.
According to MultiChoice, the trial will run until the end of May, after which qualifying subscribers can continue using DStv Stream Compact at a discounted rate of R99 per month for 12 months, provided their subscription remains active and payments are up to date.
MultiChoice CEO Willington Ngwepe said the move aims to create a more seamless viewing experience for customers.
“Our priority is to ensure customers continue to have a home for the stories they love,” he said.
“By bringing thousands of hours of Showmax Originals and a deeper on-demand library into DStv Stream, we are creating a more holistic experience where live sport, news, the best international content, and award-winning local drama live together.”
Who qualifies for the offer?
The trial is available to eligible Showmax subscribers, including those who do not have an active DStv subscription and who subscribe directly to the streaming service.
However, the offer excludes existing DStv customers who already receive Showmax as part of their package or who have added it to their DStv bill.
Subscribers will receive details on how to activate the offer via the email address linked to their Showmax account.
What users need to do
Showmax subscriptions will not automatically migrate to DStv Stream. Users who wish to continue watching content will need to follow a sign-up process and create a new profile on the platform.
The process is expected to take only a few minutes.
Those who choose not to transition can request a refund for any unused portion of their Showmax subscription, subject to terms and conditions. Autopayments will be stopped once the service is discontinued.
Platform shutdown confirmed
The Showmax platform is set to be discontinued on Thursday, 30 April, with its original content moving to DStv Stream.
Content lineup
Subscribers can expect a mix of local and international titles on the platform, including the true-crime series The People vs VBS, the finale of Die Kantoor, and ongoing episodes of Law, Love and Betrayal.
Live sport will also be a part of the offering, including major matches like the Soweto Derby in late April.
The transition is a big shift in South Africa’s streaming landscape, as MultiChoice moves to integrate its content offerings into a single, unified platform.
