  • Petrol and diesel prices are set for a massive hike this week due to rising global oil costs and Middle East tensions.
  • Taxi associations warn that traditional July fare reviews will be brought forward to April to keep businesses afloat.
  • Industry leaders are urging the government to slash fuel levies to prevent a cost-of-living crisis for commuters and pupils.

South Africa’s transport sector is bracing for a significant shock as the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) and the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) warn of “unavoidable” fare increases.

With petrol prices expected to surge by approximately R5.00 per litre and diesel by over R10.00 this Wednesday, the industry claims it can no longer absorb the rising costs without government intervention.

The spike is largely driven by escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has sent global crude oil prices soaring.

NTA spokesperson Theo Malele, speaking to SABC News, called on the government to reduce fuel levies to cushion the blow for both operators and commuters.

He warned that without such support, the financial burden on the public including those relying on learner transport, will be “very heavy.”

These increases will likely vary by association and route distance.

Operators maintain that raising fares is the only measure left to ensure the industry remains sustainable as fuel import costs spiral out of control.
